David Foster Rejects Rumors He Snubbed Meghan Markle at Charity Gala

Music producer David Foster is addressing online speculation that he ignored Meghan Markle on the red carpet at his charity event in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Speaking to People on Wednesday, August 12, the 76-year-old host responded to circulating social media discourse regarding a video clip from the Friday, August 8 gala, asserting that there was no tension between himself and the Duchess of Sussex.

Foster Clarifies Red Carpet Interaction

According to Foster, he had already welcomed Markle, 45, and her husband, Prince Harry, 41, prior to the red carpet arrivals.

“As the host of the David Foster and Friends foundation event, I had already greeted our friends, the Duke and Duchess, at the entrance 10 minutes before the red carpet encounter,” Foster said.

He further praised the royal couple for their participation at the event. “They both, graciously and selflessly, gave their time and went beyond to engage with everyone,” Foster explained. “Harry and Meghan are dear friends of mine. Anyone watching can see there was no awkward moment and certainly no snub.”

The viral video clip showed Foster walking past Markle and Prince Harry on the red carpet without acknowledging them. Moments later, Foster and his wife, Katharine McPhee, 42, returned to the couple to take photographs together.

Foster criticized how the brief moment was framed online, stating, “It’s sad that certain media chose to deceive a red carpet encounter for clickbait. They turned simple ‘positioning’ to get the best photo into a hurtful lie.”

High-Profile Attendance and Fundraising Results

The 40th anniversary gala for the David Foster Foundation featured a notable guest list, including Bill Gates, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine, and Nickelback singer Chad Kroeger.

The Times Colonist reported that the fundraiser generated more than $14.5 million in donations after four attendees made individual pledges of $1 million.

Markle previously posted a look behind the scenes of her and Harry's date night at the fundraiser. Their social media updates included a selfie as well as a video showing the couple greeting members of a bagpipe and drum band backstage.

Longstanding Relationships and Foundation History

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex share a long-standing friendship with both Foster and McPhee, supporting each other at various events over the years. Markle and McPhee also attended the same high school.

Friday’s gala was part of a week of celebratory events for the David Foster Foundation, which Foster established in 1986 to assist children requiring life-saving organ transplants. Additional festivities included a free public concert featuring Foster and friends at Victoria’s Inner Harbour on Saturday, August 8.

The event was initially announced in March to connect major donors of the David Foster Foundation with children whose lives were saved through their financial support.

At the time of the announcement, Foster stated via the organization's website: “From elegant gala experiences and unforgettable musical performances to the beauty of the iconic Inner Harbour, every moment has been thoughtfully designed to celebrate the legacy we have built together — and the countless lives forever changed because of it.”
